Some of the steps involved to start new above ground beds! This time, we're working on our second wisteria archway as an entrance to the new South Garden we're expanding. We built our first one a few years ago, and the wisteria vines have almost reached the top of the archway. The spring blooms are unbelievable, but even little beds take a fair amount of work to set up. We use a variation of the Hügelkultur method, layering various types of organic matter to create a nutrient-dense environment that really holds onto water (necessary for our extremely dry summers). Simply filling the beds with soil would be much easier, but we've had real success with this method and there's no real need for that much soil.
